Adult Education Centre of the City of Helsinki
The Centre provides liberal education for adults on their leisure time and aims to help adults cope with the society and become active members in it. Meeting the challenges of ageing of the population is one of the main strategies of the Centre.
The Centre has for years organized senior citizens study circles in different subject areas. 22 % of the students are 65 years or older. The Centre has a volunteer computer buddies programme for elderly people and a project to motivate and encourage immigrants, unemployed and senior citizens in ICT skills. It has recently started a program in social media genre to introduce new tools for teaching, learning, tutoring and networking and there is also going on the “SLIC – Sustainable learning in the community” Grudtvig-project raising awareness for older people’s competencies and opening up further opportunities for learning and engagement. The Centre also organizes courses on voluntary work together with the Social Office and Ngos.
